What is vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a safe and straightforward operation for permanent sterilisation/contraception in men.

About the procedure.

Dr Jacques Marchand MBChB, has been performing vasectomies for 30+ years, using the non-scalpel technique.

The non-scalpel technique uses a dissecting forcep to stretch open a hole in the skin (as the skin is stretched there usually is no bleeding that occurs at the site and no stitches required at finish as closes together on its own). A diathermy is used to seal the tubes carrying sperm. The tubes are placed back in the sheath and opening of sheath also sealed to stop ends getting near each other (this stops the body doing what it loves to do and reconnect things).

What costs are involved?

The cost of vasectomy is $520.00. Our one price includes:

  • Pre-operative phone or face to face consultation

  • Procedure

  • Post-operative care

  • Laboratory sperm test - for NZ residents and eligible non NZ residents only

for everyone else additional laboratory fees apply.

  • Follow up of sperm test results

 About the procedure.

    • We want you to be certain that you’ve finished your family or don’t want kids.

    • Request an appointment

You can fill out our booking request online or give us a call on (03) 366-2578

      A referral is not necessary.

Our team will contact you to arrange an appointment for an initial consultation.

    • Pre-operative consultation

We don’t need to see you before your procedure but you do need to have a pre-operative consultation.

This can be carried out face to face or over the the phone.

This purpose of this consultation is to gather your medical history and assess your suitability for the procedure, to provide you with information about the procedure and obtain your consent. You will have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    • It is stressed that this is a permanent procedure. Although reversals can be done, it is expensive and not guaranteed to be successful.

    • A few men like to store sperm for future eventualities and this needs to be discussed with us prior to the vasectomy being performed. There is a cost per sample stored (usually three samples) and a yearly fee for its ongoing storage. This is organised through Fertility Associates.

    • Preparation

Pain Relief | Take pain relief (paracetamol) one hour prior to your appointment.

      Wear | Wear supportive underwear

Shave | Shave hair below base of penis on front of scrotum

    • How long does the operation take?

The operation takes about 30-40 minutes.

Meet the Surgeon | Before the surgery you will meet Dr Jacques Marchand, who will review and talk through your clinic notes from your initial consultation. You will have the opportunity to ask any further questions.

    • What to expect during the procedure

Anaesthetic | To make sure your don’t feel a thing, our doctors will inject a small amount of local anaesthetic in the front of the scrotum at the base of the penis. Surprisingly it is not very painful at all.

Incision | A small puncture is made and the skin stretched open. Each vas is drawn up through this puncture wound one at a time as a small loop.

Seal & Close | A portion of vas (the tubes carrying sperm) is removed to create a gap in the tube and then a diathermy is used to seal the tubes carrying sperm. The tubes are place back in the sheath and opening of sheath also sealed to stop ends getting near each other (this stops the body doing what it loves to do and reconnect things).

    • Our no scalpel technique is a relatively painless, minimally invasive procedure with a quick recovery time.

    • Home Time |

Once the operation is complete you are safe to drive yourself home.

    • Rest & Recovery |

With ample rest, ice, and pain relief you will be back to your normal self in no time.

You may experience slight discomfort once the anaesthetic has worn off. Take pain relief regularly to minimise the discomfort.

You can apply Ice, to the treated area intermittently, to minimise bruising and swelling.

    • Return to Work & Activities |

To reduce the risk of bleeding for two days after you procedure we recommend taking time off from any strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting. Most other activities can continue.

Sedentary workers, If your work is sedentary you can return to work as soon as you like.

Active workers, If your job is physically demanding, we recommend taking it easy for at least two days, or until the site has healed.

    • Post Op Care |

We are here to assist you until you are fully recovered. Day or night we are available for any queries or concerns you may have. Our doctors will provide you with a postoperative care pack with the contact details in the event you need to contact us.

    • Continue Contraception |

Continue to use contraception until you have received a clear sperm count result. You are considered still fertile until you have returned a clear specimen after 12 ejaculations or three months after your vasectomy.

    • Do I need a GP referral for a vasectomy?

No, you do not need a referral from your GP. You can book your appointment directly through us.

    • Will it affect libido?

A man’s ejaculation will not change other than no sperm being present in the fluid. His sexual feelings will not change. It is only under the microscope examining the fluid that any change will be seen. It may improve their partners libido when there is no longer concern over falling pregnant.

    • Can my partner attend the appointment?

You are welcome to have a support person present to hold your hand or observe the procedure. Please let our team know if you are intending on bringing along a support.
